Hull Daily Mail Food & Drink Awards 2018

Celebrating our fabulous foodie scene

Hull Daily Mail Food & Drink Awards 2018

Hosted by Hull Daily Mail

The Food & Drink Awards in association with Turner Price will celebrate our fabulous foodie scene.

It will pay tribute to all the innovative and hardworking people who are behind it. The awards will see the people of Hull and East Riding have their say and pick those who are creating city’s finest culinary delights. We believe that the passion, determination, tireless energy and creativity that goes into running a top performing hospitality venue deserves recognition and our 11 award categories are designed to honour the very best around as well as highlighting the unsung heroes. The public will be encouraged to vote for their favourites. In each category, three businesses or individuals will be shortlisted by an independent panel of expert judges and visited by a mystery shopper. The winners will then be selected and announced at a glittering awards evening on 24 May.

THURSDAY 24 MAY 2018 – DOUBLETREE BY HILTON HULL

Shortlist Announced: 9 Apr 2018
Awards Ceremony: 24 May 2018

Categories

Best Restaurant of the year

Spanning gastro pubs right through to Michelin-starred restaurants, this category is aimed at establishments which put fine food and drink centre stage – but also offer the very best service and ambience. Dining out’s not just about refuelling, it’s about enjoying an experience; we want to know who’s ticking all the boxes. The judges will be looking for original and creative menus, where high quality fresh ingredients are at the heart.

Pub/Bar of the year

This category spans every kind of watering hole – from country pubs, all real ales and roaring fires, to city centre bars, with their master mixologists and trendy interiors. But all the nominees should have one thing in common: they stand out from the crowd and fly-high above their competitors. Along with an interesting and intelligently-curated drinks offering, skilled staff and a buzzy vibe are essential. We want to raise a glass to those who are always the very best.

Best Food Pub of the year

We’re looking for a pub/bar that serves the most amazing food. Just because you are eating at a pub doesn’t mean the quality should be any less. Here we are also looking for the venue which provides a nice relaxed atmosphere which is perfect for a chilled dining experience while catching up with friends. The winner will also be judged on the value they provide.

Tearoom/Coffee Shop of the year

This category looks like it could be one of the most hotly contested due to the number of tearooms and coffee shops popping up across Hull and East Yorkshire. Whether is a chintzy-china tea room that serves superb scones and the loveliest loose leaf, or a cool café located in a garden centre that bakes its own bagels and brews the best coffee, if it’s top-notch we want to know about it.

Takeaway of the year

Takeaways don’t always get the best press but there are some awesome ones out there. We’re looking for an enterprise that proves the naysayers wrong – by offering fresh and delicious dishes, made with skill and quality ingredients, served with speed and a smile. We’re looking for quality on all fronts. Whether it sells stellar stone baked pizzas, burgers made from best Abderdeen Angus, fish fried in brilliant beer batter, curries cooked to cracking family recipes or dinky dim-sum steamed to perfection; if you’ve got the place on speed dial, we want to know why.

Recipe of the year

We’re looking for a signature dish, an addition to a menu which is head and shoulders above the rest. Of course, we are eager for something which tastes great but it needs to be so much more than that. We are looking to crown the city’s most distinctive and unique meal. The category is aimed at restaurants who have a special one-off dish. It may even come from a mum who makes the best Shepherd’s Pie or your favourite internet blogger.

Chef of the year

We’re looking for someone for whom cooking is more than a job, it’s their life; someone who always goes the extra mile in the kitchen, creating dishes which showcase their skill, imagination and ingredients to delicious effect.
Whether they’re making traditional roast dinners or pushing the culinary boundaries with fancy foams and gels, the nominees in this category should be delivering top quality menus with great variety.
Competitors may come from all areas of the hospitality business, including hotels, restaurants, pubs, contract catering, fine dining, private and public sectors. This will recognise the close link of fine food with using the best of local produce.

Young Chef of the year (under 25)

We are seeking talented young chefs under the age of 25 with a passion for great-tasting food. We’re looking for someone for whom cooking is more than a job, it’s their life; someone who always goes the extra mile in the kitchen, creating dishes which showcase their skill, imagination and ingredients to delicious effect with a passion to go as far as they can.

Street Food/Pop Up of the Year

If the frenetic pace of modern life has a silver lining, it’s surely the rise and rise of good food on the go: the busier we are, the greater the demand for on-the-doorstep street food and impromptu pop ups.
Hull and East Riding has become a real hub for this brand of foodie enterprise with events such as The Yum Festival and Hull Street Food Nights rising in popularity. The winner of this award will be someone who’s ploughing their own culinary furrow – and bringing something top quality and truly unique to the table; they don’t just eat and drink their product, they live and breathe it.

Outstanding Customer Service

The customer service given by a business is what makes a good restaurant excellent. Judges are looking for examples of how businesses have exceeded in the way they treat their customers. This award may go to a team of people or alternatively it may be awarded to an outstanding waiter or waitress who constantly goes above and beyond to deliver an efficient, friendly and welcoming service.

Outstanding Contribution to Food & Drink

This category celebrates the individual who has made the most impact on the food community.
Selected by the judging panel, this award will hand picked as an ambassador for Hull & East Riding’s food and drink offer.
This person will be one the one who is recognised is always putting the region’s food scene first and making the most of it.
Please note, this award is not open to the public vote.
